Plugins Don't Appear Sibelius 7 64-bit

Article applies to:
  • Sibelius 7
  • Mac OS X 10.6+
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7 64-bit

Description

Plugins used in previous versions of Sibelius do not appear under Sibelius 7 64-bit despite being installed correctly.

Solution

As a 64-bit application, Sibelius 7 is only able to see 64-bit plugins. Sibelius 5 and 6 used 32-bit plugins natively so these files will not be available under Sibelius 7 64-bit.

Many plugin vendors have 64-bit versions of their plugins available, check for any software updates that might be available and contain a 64-bit plugin option.

Mac users will not need to do anything to differentiate between a 32-bit and 64-bit plugin.

Windows users should check the plugins documentation for the location of a 64-bit plugin (when available) and copy the 64-bit plugin to the Sibelius 7 64-bit VSTPlugins folder at: "C:\Program Files\Avid\VSTPlugins\".

If the plugin has both a 32-bit and 64-bit version available, make sure that only the 64-bit version is in this folder as the presence of both could potentially cause conflicts.

If a 64-bit plugin is not available, Sibelius 7 can be run as a 32-bit application which will be able to see the 32-bit plugins.

On Mac, from the "Applications" folder, select the "Sibelius 7.app" package, press "cmd+i" and in the dialog that comes up select "Open in 32-bit mode". The next time Sibelius 7 starts it will run as a 32-bit application.

On Windows, Sibelius 7 can be run as a 32-bit application by running the program from the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius 7\" location.

Windows users who need to use both 32-bit and 64-bit plugins together can do so with a third-party utility like jBridge.
